The brief and objectives:
Hulina is a former housing for the workers of historical Varjakka saw mill community. The area is a nationally significant cultural heritage site. In the renovation, the two apartments of the building were combined to serve as an exhibition and education centre for the area.
Good requisite for a successful restoration:
The building details were bound to follow along the same line with the existing style of the area. Hulina was built in 1920’s , but it’s features are classical. Hulina was in permanent residential use until the 1950's. Since then, the estate was used as a summer residence until the late 1980s and after which it had been empty. Scarce usage has helped to preserve the building's history.
Through the eyes of the designer:
The goal was to preserve as much of the original materials as possible. The new materials were chosen with respect for the old, but renovation always creates another layer of materials to the building’s history. A uniform color scheme was chosen in such a way that it is suitable for a future exhibition and educational uses.
